Podiatry – how a stroke (CVA) affects the foot

How a stroke (CVA) can affect the feet and what you as a carer can do about it.

Prepared by: Simon Cavanagh
Presented by: Wellness & Lifestyles Australia

This training will help anyone caring for a person who has had a stroke reduce the risk of developing serious complications with the feet.

Do you find that your staff lacks a basic understanding of foot pathology and issues associated with a stroke may be going unnoticed?  Are they left untreated or incorrectly treated due to poor diagnosis?  Are residents experiencing falls or sore feet due to inappropriate footwear?

This is why Wellness & Lifestyles has developed a podiatry education session on how a stroke can affect the feet.

What this training can do for you…

  • Educate nursing staff and carers about common foot problems following  a stroke (CVA)
  • How to identify these problems and the treatment options available
  • Aid in early diagnosis of foot problems to ensure prompt treatment and/or referral to podiatrist

Included in this training is…

  • How a healthy foot functions
  • How a stroke can affect the feet
  • Diagrams and pictures to aid understanding and diagnosis and preventing foot problems
  • Daily foot care tips for carers and ongoing foot care
  • Advice for purchasing footwear
  • Preventing injury to the feet and regular check-ups

Who should use this training?

You and your staff should use this training if you feel an improved understanding of the foot and cerebrovascular accidents would  benefit residents.

Podiatry-How-Strokes-Affect-Feet-VideoThe sites we have provided this training for have reported a better awareness of carers towards foot problems. This has therefore enabled previously unidentified problems to be observed at the crucial early stage of development. The Footwear education included in this training session has also assisted in the purchase of correct shoes to aid mobility, comfort and to reduce foot pathology.

This educational session does not cover all possible ailments associated with a stroke; however, it will provide a valuable core understanding for staff to provide a higher level of care.

It is set out in an easy to follow format which will benefit all levels of staff. It is important for staff to understand and appreciate that correct foot care following a stroke is vital because it can greatly impact quality of life if neglected.
