Nutrition and physical activity for healthy living

Most of us know that we should eat healthily and undertake regular physical activity but many of us are unsure of what the guidelines are for healthy eating and physical activity, and for those of us that do understand this, may still have difficulties in putting these healthy behaviours into practice due to a variety of reasons.

Prepared by:  Natarsha Croser, Accredited Exercise Physiologist (ESSAM); Associate Nutritionist (NSA)
Presented by:  Wellness & Lifestyles Australia

So what is the importance of these healthy behaviours?  Physical activity and nutrition are important for health in their own rights and inadequate physical activity and poor nutrition can result in overweight and obesity which can lead to further health problems.

A healthy lifestyle and a healthy weight can reduce the risk for; cardiovascular co-morbidities and events such as hypertension, high cholesterol, heart disease, heart attack, stroke and peripheral vascular disease; type II diabetes mellitus; osteoarthritis; sleep aponea; some cancers and psychological disorders and social problems; and physical activity can also strengthen the musculo-skeletal system, reduce the risk for osteoporosis and the risk of falls and fractures.

Recent Australian evidence suggests that up to half of Australian adults are not achieving sufficient physical activity for health benefits, that up to 86% of Australians do not eat the recommended servings of vegetables a day, and up to 46% of Australians do not eat enough servings of fruit a day.  Current national obesity estimates (BMI >30) are 19% for men and 17% for women and a further 41% of men and 25% of women are overweight but not obese (BMI 25-30).  Overweight was the greatest burden of disease in Australia in 2003.
