Even though it’s cold and wet, your residents are still at risk of dehydration!
As you get older:
- Thirst reduces
- The body becomes less efficient at absorbing/retaining water
- Increased losses such as diarrhoea and vomiting
- Swallowing problems
- Incontinence embarrassment
The signs of dehydration can be:
- Dry mouth, lips and tongue
- Strong smelling, dark urine
- Feeling faint
- Confusion
- Urinary tract infections
- Constipation
- Back of hand test (skin with decreased turgor remains elevated after being pulled up and released)
The aim should be to have at least 1500ml per day (around 6-8 cups)
Ways to increase daily fluid intake:
- Provide drinks that residents enjoy (hot or cold)
- Provide a full glass with each meal and mid-meals
- Provide a full glass with medications
- Ensure residents are sitting upright when they drink
- Use straws, spouted cups, larger handles on cups and squeeze bottles
- Provide drinks at every activity session
Caffeine drinks do not count towards daily fluid intake!
