W&L Hot Tips 24 (September 2010) – Dehydration

Even though it’s cold and wet, your residents are still at risk of dehydration!

As you get older:

  • Thirst reduces
  • The body becomes less efficient at absorbing/retaining water
  • Increased losses such as diarrhoea and vomiting
  • Swallowing problems
  • Incontinence embarrassment

The signs of dehydration can be:

  • Dry mouth, lips and tongue
  • Strong smelling, dark urine
  • Feeling faint
  • Confusion
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Constipation
  • Back of hand test (skin with decreased turgor remains elevated after being pulled up and released)

The aim should be to have at least 1500ml per day (around 6-8 cups)

Ways to increase daily fluid intake:

  • Provide drinks that residents enjoy (hot or cold)
  • Provide a full glass with each meal and mid-meals
  • Provide a full glass with medications
  • Ensure residents are sitting upright when they drink
  • Use straws, spouted cups, larger handles on cups and squeeze bottles
  • Provide drinks at every activity session

Caffeine drinks do not count towards daily fluid intake!
